I hope you have a Greg or two on your team. Meet mine.
Greg was a magician and a craftsman. In custom optics fabrication, he was my top performer by a considerable margin. I am comfortable in stating that without him, a lot of the most lucrative projects we would have had to no bid. To top it off, Greg was an exceptionally generous man who was willing to teach anyone the skills they wanted or needed to learn. He was a champion in every sense of the word.
The right man for any job
One of the most impressive feats was polishing a lens that could fit on the end of a pencil. To make it more of a challenge, it was made from a very soft material that was easily damaged and hard to fix.
His head was not in the game and we both knew it.
One afternoon, Greg was working his magic on the latest batch of tiny lenses when he stopped, cleaned up his area and walked into my office. I can’t do it today, Bill he said. I need to take a break and start tomorrow. I reminded him it was due tomorrow. He stated he would come in at 3am and the lot would be ready by 7am. I could tell his mind was not focused and I agreed.
My boss walked in a few hours later to check on Greg’s progress. He was appalled that Greg was gone and angry that I let him leave. I told Mark that Greg promised to have it finished with plenty of time to spare. He gave a look as if to say, he better or there will be a price to pay.
Luckily for both of us, he finished it ahead of schedule.
Greg finished the lot by 5:45 am the next morning. Every piece was perfect. No scrap. No rework. Perfection executed under pressure. We all witnessed the highest level of integrity demonstrated by a true champion and my right-hand man. I never doubted him.
Here’s an important question for YOU:
Is there a high performer on your team you need to trust more? To empower more? Don’t wait. High performers will find opportunities with other leaders and other companies.
Trust your high performers to come through. It is the way they live every single day.
